100 Years from now it won't matter what kind of car I drove... What kind of house I lived in... How much money I had in the bank or... What my clothes looked like... But the world will be a little better because I was important in the life of a child.
Bedford Martial Arts Academy is very involved in the community, through hosting many charity events and fundraisers, as well as volunteer karate programs. Over the past year, Master Instructor John Stewart has been volunteering teaching martial arts to students at Easter Seals NH, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping those who cannot help themselves. This program which started with two students has grown significantly over the past year, and now also includes Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Greater Manchester. Soon other charity-based organizations will be involved as well. We are pleased to announce to our students and karate families that we have given this great program a name of its own, as it has grown on its own.
Bedford Martial Arts Academy has put together K.I.C.K.I.N.G. which stands for Karate to Institute Confidence in Kids and Individuals Needing Guidance. This charity-based martial arts program serves these non-profit programs dedicated to helping children who may not otherwise have a direction in their life. These programs include the Easter Seals Program and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Greater Manchester. Other organizations will be joining the K.I.C.K.I.N.G. program in the future. The K.I.C.K.I.N.G.program, created by Master Instructor John Stewart, gives children the opportunity to learn martial arts and become a leader.
The program at Easter Seals teaches children with a wide range of disorders that martial arts is fun and builds confidence. Classes teach all of the basics of kenpo, and have most recently started to introduce the students to basic ground work, and weapons techniques. We use the building block approach at Easter Seals just like during our regular classes. The students have flourished, and now refer to it as “Fun Fridays”.
With Big Brothers Big Sisters, our program provides children the positive influences they need, when they may be missing that aspect in their life. The K.I.C.K.I.N.G. program helps an already wonderful organization, by providing martial arts instruction in a group environment, where the kids can learn confidence building, and make some friends at the same time. These classes are held at our facility twice per month. The students enrolled in the program are kids who have not yet been matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister also known as a “BIG”.
All of the students in the program wear a belt and the “K.I.C.K.I.N.G.” T-Shirt in class as part of their uniform and test for their next rank just like regular students. They love that they have to work for something. It gives them a sense of pride when they earn their rank, as well as a sense of confidence.
In conjunction with Easter Seals of NH, and the Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Bedford Martial Arts Academy brings martial arts to children who would otherwise be without. The goal of the K.I.C.K.I.N.G. program is to help these organizations change a child’s life for the positive, and show them how to become leaders. Martial Arts builds confidence in children, gives them discipline, and does so in a safe way. Bedford Martial Arts Academy is committed to making sure that all of its students whether in regular karate classes, the afterschool program, vacation camps, women’s self-defense classes, adaptive martial arts classes, or the K.I.C.K.I.N.G. program, gain all of the benefits of martial arts and have fun along the way.
Many of the children who belong to these organizations have been or are currently involved with DCYF and/or NH Foster Care. Bedford Martial Arts Academy students and families certainly know what it is like to go through hard times. At one point or another we all have known someone who has been in need to some degree, so we understand that children and families out there need help sometimes, especially with the economy the way it is. Most Bedford Martial Arts Academy students are fortunate enough to have a great home, education, hot cooked meal and family who love them. However, many of the children involved in the K.I.C.K.I.N.G. program are not fortunate enough to experience these luxuries we take for granted. This is why our K.I.C.K.I.N.G. program provides such a great benefit to already wonderful programs, and will continue to do so.
Bedford Martial Arts Academy will keep the kids K.I.C.K.I.N.G., because we believe that if even one child is lead in the right direction, then we did our jobs.
